Geeking up the Whitehouse

Ok, so we all know that Barack Obama promises to be a positive force for science. And we know that he is more bookish than past Presidents... But does this necessarily make him a geek?

Well now, if there were any doubt, it's been totally removed by the awesome revelation that he collects comic books (making him a so-called 'fanboy' in the US). Obama's love of Spider-Man has already sent comic sales rocketing in some places.

The Obama election campaign was the geekiest ever, stuffed with crowdsourced fundraising and attracting young voters with high-tech web tools. There's news now that he will post his weekly Fireside Chats on YouTube.

But being a political tecchie these days also carries risks. Tech writer Davy Winder says that political hopefuls applying to join Obama's Administration will have to pass the "Obama Geek Test":
The vetting form wants applicants to 'fess up if they have ever sent an email which might embarrass Obama. What's more, they want copies of the potential smoking email gun. Oh, and copies of all blog postings by the applicant for good measure, and not forgetting links to their Facebook or MySpace page should they have one.
Oh, the burden of being a geek in power.
