Chat with Emma Darwin

There was a time when a man's wife was nothing more than a man's wife. Fortunately, we have evolved... (In fact, my own wedding is coming up this year and I can proudly say that I will be keeping my own surname. Sadly, my lovely fiancee has refused to change his).

This brings me to the topic of the man of the moment, who (in scientific circles at least) is Charles Darwin. This year has brought attention not only to his work, but also his life and his wife, Emma Darwin. Although not a scientist, she was a fairly interesting woman in her own right. Not least among her achievements were raising seven children and writing 60 diaries spanning 60 years since the age of 16.

You might think that being the wife of a brilliant scientist doesn't necessarily qualify Emma to demand much attention from us today, but if you are interested in the personal details of Charles Darwin's life 200 years ago and what it was like to be married to him, then the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology is offering people the chance to chat with Emma Darwin (presumably channelled through a live person).

Latest post: Emma's recipe for cheese straws.
