Miss Atom 2009

James Acton, a science and security academic and a former tutor of mine at King's College's Department of War Studies, has a post on the brilliant ArmsControlWonk blog about an event in Russia called Miss Atom (he blogs about it every year...hmmm). It's a beauty pageant for women who work in the country's nuclear industry.

I went to a former Soviet nuclear power station in Lithuania last year. It was huge, like a town in itself, so I suppose the remarkable number of women who appear to be eligible to enter this year's contest isn't that strange. But Miss Atom? I wonder what the crown looks like...

I vote for contestant number 1759 (whose name I unfortunately cannot read in Russian, but is in the photo above). I'll be keeping an eye on James' site for an update.
